Maternal Morbidity & Mortality Surveillance Unit

Ensures all maternal deaths are notified, investigated and reviewed at national and sub-national levels; maintains national databases on maternal deaths.

Key functions:
• Conducting confidential inquiries into maternal deaths.
• Implementing surveillance for severe acute maternal morbidity (SAMM).
• Establishing notification systems for reproductive age female deaths.
• Strengthening surveillance on antenatal and postnatal morbidity.
• Monitoring birth defects through surveillance systems.
• Developing linkages with databases like the Registrar General's Department to enhance mortality and morbidity tracking.

The unit operates maternal mortality surveillance, confidential death enquiries, SAMM surveillance, and reproductive age female death notification systems.
